THE TWO GIRLS A CHRISTMAS STORY

THE TWO GIRLS

I had to write about an incident that happened to me two days ago because I think by telling the story it might take away the pain that I've been feeling...and perhaps it will help me understand the world and the times that we living in now.

I was watching the news and I hear a few light knocks in my front door… and there were two little girls that looked like sisters, around 10 years old standing in front of me and asking me with in a very timid voice If I would like to buy some gold jewelry that their grandma left for them to sell, so I ask why they wanted to sell the jewelry?  Both said at the same time that they wanted to sell this jewelry to get some nice Christmas presents for their parents. Obviously the whole situation was very odd and alarming!
So my brain started thinking rapidly……………….
  • The jewelry is fake; probably they are just gypsies and they trying to sell fake jewelry.
  • They stole the jewelry from their parents, and they don’t know what they are doing?
  • Their parents are drug addicts and they send their kids to sell jewelry to pay for the habit.
  • Is 2.00pm in the afternoon weekday, 2 girls no more than 10 years old selling gold jewelry??

I responded abruptly.." I'm not interested!" and closed the door..

As I closed the door I felt in my heart that I was doing the wrong thing..

I needed to call the police and inform them about this incident  because I was thinking is not correct for these two girls going house to house trying to sell gold jewelry ... not to mention how  dangerous it was for them.

So first I decide to call my neighbor and asked him if

Two little girls showed up in his house selling jewelry?

"No" my neighbor said "Maybe they are thieves trying to case your house?"

First they knock on the door few times...if no one is at the home they signal their partners to rob the house.

My thoughts escalate to the concept that these two girls were a part of a bigger group of thieves trying to steal from houses, after all this neighborhood has had a few break-ins recently.

I called 911 and the police officer asked me the usual questions and informed me that I was the third person to report the same kind of incident with-in the last 10 minutes..

I asked if they were sending a car out to investigate...

Five minutes later the police car passes by my house, later I saw two police cars two blocks parked at a house not too far from my house ..I assumed that they must have "caught" the girls...and that would be the end of it.

This morning like usual I went to do my early walk with my wife telling her the story and as I was telling the story I had a different perspective..Perhaps the jewelry was real, and the grandma really gave them the jewelry to sell...that maybe they really did need the money..

I started feeling regret in the way had responded to the girls because I did not trust them from the beginning and my first perception about them was the “worst scenario” the same reaction as my neighbors.

As we approached the intersection. We saw the same two police cars so I asked them what happened with the two girls and whether the jewelry was fake..Were they apart of a scam?

The police said sadly that these two girls were just very poor kids from the neighborhood and were trying to sell their family's jewelry to buy holiday gifts..Unbeknownst to the family..so the girls were feeling scared and regretful about being caught...

I remember that when you are young..you don't realize the value of things but you want to resolve problems..and that these girls were wanting to buy gifts for the family.

I think that there's a lesson in this experience..perhaps many of us are becoming too cynical..maybe we should be more trusting and have more love in our hearts...I hope that these girls and their family have a wonderful holiday..

Happy Holidays to everyone and God Bless you..
